What is Communication ?

Communication is a very important part in everyday relationships. We often hear how important communication is, but not what it is and how we can use good communication in our relationships. So by definition, communication is the transfer of information from one place to another. Which in other terms such as a relationship, communication can be telling someone else what you’re experiencing, how your feelings are about something, or someones needs.

Best Ways to Listen and Communicate

Listening also takes a very important part of communication. Listening to someone clearly can encourage another to be very open and honest.

  1. Make sure to keep eye contact.

  2. Avoid distracting gestures such as fidgeting with a pen or any object.

  3. Letting the person speak without no interruptions.

  4. Be aware of your tone

With today’s generation, we have texting, social media and other apps to “communicate.” Although sometime that might be easier, it’s not effective rather than being face to face with someone. People might not be as open through text versus in person. Being open and honest can make life less stressful. Holding emotions or thoughts can cause an abundant amount of stress towards life that can easily be solved by talking to someone.

Communicating When Stressed…

Here are some of our top tips on how to communicate better when you’re stressed:

When we decide to open up about stress, whether we have been bottling it up for a while, or have only been stressed for a few hours, it can sometimes be very hard to communicate it in the way in which we want it to be perceived. This can only heighten peoples nerves surrounding opening up to someone about how they are feeling.

  1. Carefully think about what you’re trying to say: Take slow breathes, relax your shoulders and breathe in and out.

  2. Before communicating your stress, ensure that you are not too stressed to talk: signs that you are too stressed to talk; muscle tightness, stomach ache, clenched fists, flushed face or breathing difficulties.

  3. Understand that sometimes it takes some people a few conversations for them to absorb the information that you are trying to tell them, so be patient. Sometimes opening up to someone and telling them that you are stressed, comes as quite a shock.

  4. Progressive muscle relaxation; tensing, holding, then releasing muscles, has also been proven to lower both physical and mental stress.

  5. Be clear. Use examples and explain what you mean, so that it is easier for the person to respond and comfort you
