Physical Activity in Club Sports.

Physical Activity and its importance is not disputed. Though throughout life we tend to make excuses on why we cannot exercise.  Having a choice in your activity is a major helper in being able to get to exercise. Group activities and Adult Team Sports are a great and easy way to keep yourself fit while having a good time and improving your mental health by being social.

There are various kinds of sports clubs a person could participate in:

1. Baseball/Softball

2. Football

3. Soccer

4. Rugby

5. Roller Derby

6. Tennis

7. Bicycling

The Hard Data

According to a study from BMC Public health by Linda Ooms, et al “Characteristics of insufficiently active participants that benefit from health enhancing physical activity (HEPA) promotion programs implemented in the sports club setting” the participants had an significant increase in overall level of activity from baseline over a six month period and received dramatically more support from their friends and family when participating in sports clubs.

According to a Study in 2010 by Eime, Rochelle, et al.. “Does Sports Club Participation Contribute to Health-Related Quality of Life?” from the University of Ballarat Australia and the University of Queensland, Australia participants in club sports have higher levels of physical activity than even active individuals who participate in going to a gymnasium or walking for activity.

This is by no means an exhaustive list yet a good place to start within your community!

Per the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition “adults should do at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. Preferably, aerobic activity should be spread throughout the week.”
